I used to be a drill master, where I mostly focused on getting the tasks completed. I’ve been in a leadership role for most of my career, so I am not surprised to see the “relationship” got a high range from the survey.
The survey indicated that my “tasks” are still in the moderate range. I am pretty hands-off once my team is up to speed on what to do. I don’t believe a better leader has a clear line of relationships and tasks. I believe this depends on the environment you are in. For example, in a start-up, getting the tasks done correctly or being flexible is key. In mature, profitable companies where sustainability and retaining talents are key to moving ahead, then the relationship is worth more focus. Knowing how to balance relationships and tasks is key for better leader. I heard the term “leadershift,” however, staying a little bit on tasks or relationships are the true skill a leader could balance.
I bet you know exactly where you fit with your "behaviors" in DISC, Chia-Li. It appears you are getting more comfortable with what you have to do to account for other behaviors vis-a-vis relationships, yes?
