Hello everyone,

My name is Chia-Li Chien, pronounced Jolly Jan. I am the Succession Program Director at Value Growth Institute, my consulting and coaching firm. Before my consulting practice and academic, I held several senior management positions in Fortune 500 companies, including Diageo, ABB, CIGNA, and RSA Insurance Group. I frequently speak about succession and retirement planning at national conferences and have published three award-winning books. I serve on the boards of various national financial service associations. I have a Ph.D. in financial planning and is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), Project Management Professional (PMP®), Certified Professional Business Coach (CPBC), and Extended DISC Certified Professional.

My husband and I live in Charlotte, NC. We are empty nesters; our daughter is finishing her Ph.D. in muscle stem cell biology. I love hiking, traveling, eating, and cooking. I am not a foodie, but I am close to it. We've traveled to 13 countries and 40 states in the US so far. But my daughter has already reached 16 countries at such a young age. She inspired me to set my goal to reach 30 countries by 2030.

Our latest country was Iceland. During our visit in August 2024, there were 14.5 hours of daylight daily. However, there are only 3 hours of daylight in December each year, so we were lucky to enjoy the extended daylight. My favorite country is Portugal, which might change as we travel to many more countries.

One of my goals was to travel to 30 countries by 2030. No matter who inspires you to set goals, what is one of your goals to share with us?

I look forward to working with you on the CPBL-401. Feel free to connect with me via LinkedIn

Hello everyone,

I am so glad to e-meet you. I posted my introduction in the class's overall TalkBoard, so I won't repeat it here.

As the textbook describes, I have held many leadership positions or titles. My first serious leadership position was as a Senior Director of Financial Systems at a publicly traded company. A team of 176 people reported to my five direct reports. Based on the textbook description, I was a manager at best during those days, even though I was on the executive team with $32M budget oversight.

To fast-forward, I held many other leadership roles closer to the textbook's definition. For example, I was the president of the FPA Charlotte chapter and the FPA national pro bono committee chair. These were volunteer positions where I had to motivate volunteers to do good for our profession and the local community. I believe my volunteer leadership role shows my true leadership success.

My current leadership role is a title at best. It was the worst experience I ever had in my career. I am a sandwich where my supervisor(s) imposed constant changes. Due to these sudden changes, I am a punching bag for some of my direct reports.

I am learning to re-align my passion with a potential leadership role without leadership titles or ranks. I care deeply about the growing financial planning profession.

Like the FPA volunteer leadership role, success comes from how I can help a group of people who enjoy "contributing" to the common cause.

@jollychialichien-com I feel your frustration and I hope we can work together to overcome some of the hurdles that we face. And even if we can't overcome them, at least we'll be in good company. Looking forward to getting to know you in this setting!

Hello, Chia-Li Chien

You are an inspiration across so many disciplines that are passions for me as well so I am keen to learn as much as I can.  And, of course, I am honored to consider you a colleague within DPC, PBCA and TAC.  With the horsepower Jim has brought together (including some horsing around as colleagues), this CPBL program cannot keep from being a huge contribution to leaders and huge business success.
