  1. How can we ensure the new mission statement reflects our core values and strategic vision?
    1. Our core values and strategic vision should be top of mind as we're writing our Mission Statement. In most cases you should borrow similar vocabulary to include in the mission statement. As we draft versions of our mission statement, refer back to our values and vision frequently to make sure that they are aligned.
  2. What process should we follow to engage our stakeholders in the development of the new mission statement?
    1. For internal staff, make sure to share the core values and strategic vision and ask them to consider the pieces that really stand out to them. Ask them to think about what the organization's purpose and "why" is and request that everyone submit a draft. You may find pieces from each draft that fit together into a cohesive mission. If you are interested in the customer perspective, solicit feedback through surveys. A few sample questions are "What do you love about our organization? Describe what it is that we do. How do you see that we adhere to the following values?"
  3. How can we effectively communicate and integrate the revised mission statement across the organization to ensure buy-in and alignment?
    1. Make the process open to all employees at the organization. Ask for suggestions and use employee ideas where it's appropriate. Talk about the process at all-hands meetings and, once you've landed on a mission, talk about it frequently. Ask your departments to develop department-level mission statements that are related to the organization's mission.

Rob, your response showed a firm display of this week's content on mission statement. You did a great job weaving the organization's values into the Why. I was also impressed with your recommendation to combine different perspectives of the draft into one cohesive mission statement! Open-ended feedback, and input show that you are serious about having the Who a living part of the mission statement. Well done!!
